If the former it sounds like a very permie thing to do. Think it can be quite common, I had the same thing when I doing my A-Levels for a job in Halfords many years ago. If it is this for a contract, I would be giving it a wide birth.
Sounds like a consultancy to me

Depends how desperate the op is for work.

I would tell them to feck off......after I'd finished laughing

One of my last perm roles did this - it was more for getting lots of candidates interviewed at once cos we were in a rush.

        2 hours was a coding test/examples IIRC

Next bit was an interview with 2 people.

Yeah I have done this - I wouldn't do so again...
You will probably get a group task to sort out, everyone is being watched to see how they interact in a team etc.
Everyone is on best behaviour so it is usually ok, you want to contribute but not squash anyone else down (unless the job is after that type !)

If this is a contract, it better pay top dollar, if it's perm - then why ??

Never heard of anything like this. Sounds humiliating.

              Hunger games next.

Laxative or LSD in the coffee pot in the morning. Last person standing by lunch, gig is yours. Sounds a doddle.

Have seen this for perm roles with some of the so called big 5 consultancies.
I was invited I think it was Deloitte 3 years ago or so, told them if they were interested in hiring me they should meet me face to face, which they didn't want, because HR process blah blah blah, so I declined.
