It's not according to the rules, but they're routinely broken all the time.

I went for a job as a long distance lorry driver, interview went really well, I know all the quickest routes to everywhere in the world and know how to drive a truck from practice on private roads, but I don't have a liceance. They said they need someone with a licence!!! I can could get one in a month or two but they said they already had people with the same skills with a licence. Is this Illegal?

Could this be the worst "I could have got a gig but I didn't because of the agent" thread ever?

But to drive said lorry, you assume you need a licence, but to do a .net contract it is assumed you know the .net framework, not have a licence to kill Bond style.!

Not illegal... against best practices outlined by the DVA. If you bear in mind that a lot of people with DV clearance will already be applying for the role (with all the relevant experience), the agency wants to make sure that the best candidates are being put forward. This is not to say that opportunities will not exist in the future for companies to sponsor you to undergo SC or DV clearance. As already stated, move on.

I had to have it to work on Nuclear power stations. They sent someone round to interview my family, previous employers and my Doctor.
It took over a week, but that was back in the early nineties. don't know how they go about it now.
Never been asked for SC since! I must be in the system.
