Just got this in my inbox:

I am currently looking for a C#.Net Developer to help with a 3-6 month contract in the South west. The role will be maintaining 2 projects within both winforms and web forms. The contract will be likely to extended and will ensure work over the Christmas period.

The company utilise the following skill sets:
C#
..Net 2.0
ASP.Net
Winforms
Web Forms


The rate for this position is between £12-18 per hour.

Worryingly, this does not seem to be an isolated aberration - I did a search for c# / asp.net contracts on Jobserve earlier and noticed a few coming in at less that 200 quid a day. Are things really that bad? Thank god I'm on a 12 monther at the moment!

Seen a few jobs doing this, basically permie wages on a 1 year contract.

They will be getting paid straight from the company and would be taxed PAYE at source.

The only person that would apply would be an out of work permie who was desperate to get something.

That was how it went with Network, Server and Desktop support about 8 years ago. Rates went from £30-40 an hour to £12-20 and haven't gone back up since. Admittedly it was because every bloke and his dog could take basic training and blag a job and there were an awful lot of imported support people who undercut the rates.

That's not true - I'm in network support and i'm getting quite a bit over 200 per day, what i do and my expereince isn't that amazing (6yrs+), and i'm in the north east. I've also seen server stuff around here for around £30p/h. Sometimes you do see jobs for £12-20 p/h but they are either idiots or the job is very junior.

Mid to high end range is normally upwards of 500 per day. However it is correct that the very high end (CCIE/Design etc) has droppped down from around £800 per day to around £500-600, from what i've seen.

Sounds like a fixed term contract to me (i.e. perm role, rather than contract). The agency have broken the salary down into an hourly rate allowing for tax and NI reductions.

That was what I thought until my 3 year gravy train contract hit the buffers, if your contract ended tomorrow you may find yourself looking at the £18ph hour roles with the same disgust I had, 4 months on the bench and you have no choice.

Well it is what I found and why I got out of support. Yes well paying jobs were still available, but they were thin on the ground.

hmm, i just got offered a £18ph role with the NHS down south...about 3 hours drive away from home.

after working out the costs of staying away, the junk food I would end up buying, additional petrol costs....after tax, I think I would be better off stacking shelves at my local Sainsburys....

So I turned it down....on the bench for 3 months and counting.....

What were you supporting? Also it's not just support that i do - network implementations as well, no server stuff though as that is generally over subscribed.
