another recruiter trick?

So what if a recruiter phones you and gives the name of a promising company that might be hiring in your area... but won't submit your CV? On the face of it, it seems foolish because he knows you can apply independently. But perhaps it is not so foolish after all?

Did they ask you about your current / recent roles and ask for references?

He seemed as if he were about to but then gave up hope.

But the company is real. Whether the recruiter actually has a connection to it is another matter.

Sometimes they drop the big names because they think they'll impress you. Or just because it makes them feel better about themselves. Usually along with the fact that they are "really good mates with the MD" (which means "the MD once laughed at one of my crap football jokes out of politeness").

There's usually nothing sinister about it.

Maybe he thought you were a good fit, then realised "hang on...programmer and programme manager...they're not the same thing are they?"

Or he might looked at your CV then picked up a relevant company in your area and gave you a call so you could trust him and give him some leads...
