Recruiter says they cannot disclose the company's name but want to forward CV

Is this a normal practise in contracting?

Apparently financial institutions has asked for candidates but cannot disclose the name of the bank/organisation.

Yes. It's to stop other recruiters finding out who the client is and going ringing them up to offer their services.

You can guess many clients based on location and sector but generally agenct's can be cagey about who the client is. In some instances there might not be a client at all and it's just a fake advert. Such is life.

Not being told annoys some people but on the whole most don't mind.

I spoke to an agency yesterday. They disclosed the name of the client. I know someone at the client. I thanked the agent for their time and have contacted the client directly.

You could say you don't like your CV being forwarded without knowing who the client is. It could well be a client you don't want to work with, for instance. Depends on whether it bugs you or not.

But, as NLUK said, you can often shortlist the client based on location and sector, and even key words in the spec.

This happens a lot when there are sensitive issues around existing staff (they are being fired without knowing anything about it! usually) so it does happen. The other reason maybe the client wants to understand who exactly is available & how much lower they can get away with when the current contractor (s) may have developed the god complex & become unbearable to work with as they feel they are not expendable & start to take the mickey mouse!

Most of the time there is no role and the agent is BS-ing you. If in the same conversation the agent also asked for 2 references it's 100% certain there is no role.

Say they can represent you for the role PROVIDED YOUR CV IS SUBMITTED.
