Kiwi BA looking for London help

I am looking at moving back to London in Feb and was wondering if anyone could give me a few pointers

I have about 10 years IT experience, with about 5 as a BA/Consultant. I have worked in a variety of industries but have specialised in advertising, eCommerce and telecommunications. My technical skills are pretty good, ranging from Java to SOA in .Net. I have all the usual BA skills (i.e. I can look really busy while browsing the internet and I can't spell)

    My questions are………

    - Given my background, how long is it likely to take to find a contract in London
    - What are rates like? From what I can see, 450 seems average
    - Is it worth the risk?

For all the homesick Kiwis out there, it is looooooovly and hot in NZ at the moment and the fishing is picking up. We are getting good bags of snapper around Rangitoto after work

Yes, 450 New Zealand dollars per week is just about right for your skills.

I think you will find the Poles / Indians have taken all the contracts.
If it's so great in NZ why are you returning?
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

The London market is booming.... salaries for .Net contracts are now higher than the minimum wage for permies, and accomodation is dirt cheap, too.

As you are not British, you will receive preferential treatment, and of course, you don't have to pay tax, which is a bonus. In fact, landlords won't even ask for a deposit, as they like to encourage Diversity.

British women will also be easily wooed with gifts of nylon stockings and chocolate, which are in short supply over here due to us being at war.

Is there a Kiwi IT board where people are looking for work, so us Brits can post about how we want to move there (just for a few years, to buy up some property and bring back some cash), how skilled we are, and how much money we want...? I am sure we would get lots of helpful advice... after all, the IT economy there is so bouyant they have shedloads of people wanting to move here to teach us Brits how to program... and of course settle here long term, not just hoover up as much money as they can then go home.

I notice you say moving 'back' to London. If you are moving back I am sure you will know that February isn't a good time in terms of weather and general misery.

I'm not sure what you mean by risk. If you mean the risk you won't find a contract, who knows ?

Of course it depends on your circumstances, but if at all possible, if I was you I would go and work in the US or Hong Kong.

I don't think that you will have a problem getting a contract with that experience (so long as you don't have two heads, can turn up for an interview sober, etc.) I would pitch at the BA/Consultant level - it pays better.

But we all seem to be curious - why do you want to come back? London is a great place to work for a while, build up some money, then take that away to somewhere that you really want to live.

If you have been living in Auckland for ten years then I would guess that you a sitting pretty on a decent house that has rocketed in value over the last five years. In that position I would stay there.

Come on over. The weather is great, the transport cheap and clean and roads empty. All the crime has gone and so has all forms of tax (n/a to NZ who don't pay any anyway).

.NET contracts are numerous and paying £800/day on average.

                  You'll love it.

He has quite obviously been lured back to the UK by the apparent increase in ladyboys contracting around these parts....

P.S DP - .Net pays less than minimum wage .... it's so easy even the people who post in General can use it, not just those boffins in Technical who act like Basil Fawlty thrashing a stalled mini when they shout at the PC and it doesn't write C# code for them.......
