    New Contract Whilst Renewal Available

I have a 3 month renewal at clientco on the table, although also have a new role in the offing which I would prefer and will know for sure next week (hence my earlier post around informal contract).

My clientco hiring person is back from leave next Monday and will want to know if I will accept the renewal. I need a plan for not giving him a decision until mid next week when I know whether the new role is a goer, and without putting anyone's noses out of joint. Tricky one - any suggestions welcome.

    Honesty?

"I can't give you a decision just yet as I have been contacted by a previous customer who is closer/pays more/has better coffee. I'll give you a decision by x date..."

    or...

<PC>Accept it and go off sick</PC>
And the lord said unto John; "come forth and receive eternal life." But John came fifth and won a toaster.

Tell him you want some minor clause changes in the contract. That'll delay another day or two whilst they argue the toss.

Tell the new client that you have another offer that you need to move on by Monday, so they need to let you know latest by then. Aside from being the truth, it'll create a scarcity mindset for the new client and (hopefully) make them want you more.... or they'll be honest and tell you to take the renewal.

For all my successful contracts the client knew they wanted me straight after the interview. I would call them on Monday and say you need an answer, if they can't give you one it means they don't really want you but might take you if they're desperate. In which case you're better off with the renewal anyway.
                I'm alright Jack

Ask the agency to consider increasing your rate by £25 / day and then you either walk or cave in according to the outcome of the other gig.

Tell them with all the changes around IR35 and the public sector debacle you have to have all contracts, even extensions sent off for review
