IMHO that not cool behaviour from client. I would suggest if they invite you for interview they should follow through.

You would rather they waste your time interviewing you for a position they've already filled?

Sounds like they did you a big favour by not wasting your time. It's more likely that they had already made an offer to the other guy and were stalling for time while the offer was being considered. Had things gone another way, it's likely they would have gone forward with your interview.

Personally I would be much more inclined to get angry if my time had been wasted making a trip to the client and then going through a sham interview when an offer had already been made to someone else.

I say fine but the next morning they phone and say the position has gone as they interviewed someone yesterday

You were Plan B, they went with Plan A, if you are on the bench nothing lost, if you are in contract and lost a days billing to take the interview I use this an a valuable lesson on bird in the hand and why I don't look for a gig until after I have finished the last

But look at it from a clients perspective. They should be calling the one they want 'First candidate' as there is a chance they won't take the gig do you've got to have a second option lined up. It's common sense for anyone that's had their first choice decline and had a load of hassle starting again. I certainly have.
You have to appreciate you are going to be second option at times. It's an option that is needed quite regularly. It's part of the game of trying to win work. You can't get angry just because that's the way the game works.

Absolutely this and IMO is part of the skills a contractor has. Our job is to get work. The bit on client site is easy. Hell, even the permies can do it. If it's your job to get work surely knowing how the process works is pretty fundamental. Getting upset because you are being messed about a bit as 2nd option is permie mentality.

Surely the way it works though is that clients sees CVs, decides they want to interview x many and arrange it. To see maybe 1 and then not bother with the rest seems a bit off. How do they know the last one wont be the best?

The thing is, a lot of times you know that you already have the best guy for the "job".
Especially if you are recruiting a true specialist role and have contacts in industry,technical forums etc.
