    Interesting reading all these comments.
I am currently closing down my business. Started this in April 17 and they have still not sorted it for me.

I have requested a refund as when challenged my accountant has admitted being off getting married and then sick, but they have refused.
I've received the standard poor service, emails answered at the end of the day which didn't answer my question and when challenged changing there mind on the response.
Not to mention having to remind them about making returns......I could go on.

I would definitely echo the "avoid at all costs" stance.

If you are moving to a FreeAgent accountant then you could always put in the previous year's transactions as well to calculate the opening balances and then you can do them yourself, but that means extra work for you and paying twice. Some accountants (*cough* Dynamo *cough*) would probably do that for you if you ask nicely.
When I left InTouch they refused to do my self assessment as they said it was a free service they provided for people staying with them! That left a bitter taste in my mouth after so many yrs, especially when they couldn't provide proof of this from their terms.

The accountant I moved to picked this up thankfully . So I'd say to the OP if you want to move and your current one is dire, perhaps see what you can negotiate with a new accountant. You may find they are keen for your business so only charge you a small (or zero) fee to do this year's stuff.

I moved from Churchill Knight to Dynamo over a year ago and it's the best thing I ever could have done.

Churchill were frankly hopeless, as well as being ridiculously expensive. They simply didn't trouble to tell me when bills were due, and when I left, well lets say it took Dynamo a few weeks to sort everything out. I basically "owed" money to all kinds of government agencies that Churchill hadn't even picked up on. VAT, NI, you name it, I owed it. It was a bit of a lean time until we sorted it out, but I have a contact Dominic there who keeps me on the straight and level now.

If I email, I get an answer usually same day, I've never needed to call them.

I don't actually mind paying taxes as such, because after all I wouldn't be here today without the NHS looking after me and picking up the cudgell when Cancer came to visit, I just don't enjoy getting those ominous letters from the VAT man. Don't get them any more now, I know when it's due, how much is due, where the funds are...

So I can get on with doing what I do best. Earning a living. It's brilliant to know, from my perspective, that any concerns are brought to my inbox immediately. And for half the price of Churchill Knight, where I never seemed able to contact the same person twice, except when I told them I was moving...

Your accountant is your employee. They may not be good at their job but as the owner of the business it's your responsibility to know what is needed and when. You may not do your VAT return personally but you should know enough about your company that you can nudge your staff if they're slow or request timescales from them.

Are you seriously saying you never paid NI, VAT etc and this didn't raise a red flag until you changed accountant?

I disagree. Your accountant should be a trusted supplier of expert help and advice. If not, bin them. I wouldn't go to a surgeon, lawyer, dentist etc that I felt I couldn't trust.
