    TaxAssist Accountants - Reading

Hey, just had a consultation with a local accountant and have been quoted 140+ vat per month and 180+ Vat for setup including payroll registration and Vat registration. Going by these forums it seems on the expensive side of things? I'm new to contracting and they would pretty much do everything for me. I did ask if they could budge on the prices but they are fixed. Should I look elsewhere and use a national accountant firm? Sorry for the newbie questions.

Although they are not ridiculous fees, they are most definitely on the high side. That said the £180 for registering for taxes is insulting!

I'm a little bias but get yourself a good FreeAgent accountant who deals with contractors.

Don't bother with a local guy. If you go for one of the Freeagent accountants mentioned in my recommendation thread in the sticky you'll never need to go see them. The tool is super intuitive so won't need to keep asking where you are in the year and you are in control of most of it. That cuts down the time spent by the accountant and so the cost. You also get an accountant that specializes in contractors as well so double bonus. Probably cheaper as well.

Thank you for the replies. I've been tearing my hair out with who to go for! Have you heard of FMA accountants? It's quite a big decision and i'm worried about making the wrong one!

In my experience, go for a specialist contractor accountant. The local accountant [lack of] knowledge has been astounding these last few weeks in respect of IR35.

When setting up a ltd company does the payroll and Vat registration come as standard, the guy said others offering a free service wouldn't do this?

Have a look on some of the recommended company's websites. I am sure they have information on what service they offer around setting you up. It's bread and butter for them.

No but are they a FreeAgent accountant? Are they contractor specialists?

Had a look on stickies and think dynamo accounting looks good. Free Ltd company set up, competitive pcm and no joining/leaving fees. I'll give em a bell tomorrow. I was unsure not having a face to face service but seems it isn't necessary.

I've seen Darren. Believe me, it's a blessing.
